>gibe me sup for OHYS raws plsss Share (づ ̄ ³ ̄)づ
Stop this meme, ohys-raws is worse than CR, or this, or literally anything. Not their fault, it's just that TV rips suck.
Why not make a second subtitle track without the agressive localization. Apart from the M'lady and Sparky the subs aren't bad and are an obvious improvement over HS.
The nuance that she is not a servant of her or her family? Go read OtoBoku, Harukoi Otome or PE. Maybe you'll learn in what context is onee-sama used amongst fellow female students.
There is nothing wrong with the usage of milady, given its contextual uses in English.
Also, why you're choosing to ignore the dynamics of Kuroko and Mikoto's relationship (the obsessive adoration, the floods of respect for saving her life, willing to do anything for her including even almost dying for her, etc) is beyond me.
There's really not much more to be said on the matter. Having the same discussion over and again to each new person is becoming the definition of insanity at this point.
@GoodJobMedia
If you're going to try to justify your memes at least do a proper job like commie did with Eoten.
Right now you sound like you're trying to convince yourself more than anybody else.
>We picked Milady, which does not at all carry the same meaning as the original form of address (extreme adoration+borderline romantic feelings vs simple servile attitude, a feeling of duty towards her), because it makes sense to us
>It’s just regular ol’ Japanese to English translation
These two go against each other. Pick one. By the way, I know which one you're going to pick, so mark your TL as re-write next week.
The clueless certainly doth protest too much, that's for sure. AnonAlliance is out there to download for your substandard needs.
There is nothing left to justify at this point. Either watch, or don't. This release is the definitive one out of those currently available, though.
Jesus christ. I don't really follow the fansub scene nowadays, but it's 2018 and here I thought people would have left behind the whole "tailor your subs for my turboweeb needs or you're worthless and you should kill yourself" by this point. Apparently not.
God forbid we actually *translate* things. Also, Sparky is best Biribiri, no contest.
M'lady is 'your' interpretation, but that's not the japanese interpretation of what onee-sama 'means' or its intended use. Though mi'lady could suffice as (poorly translated) english localization.
I can understand why you would think m'lady is appropriate given the relationship between the two, but it is far too unnatural as Kuroko neither sees Misaka as superior being or idolizes her, but simply adores her as an "onee-sama" like any other student would. What the hell would onii-sama be? By your logic it'd be 'mi'lord. That's just plain silly and highly inaccurate..
Mi'lady is NOT onee-sama, it is OJOU-SAMA. Mi'lord is BOUCHAMA. Anyone who's seen an anime with actual ladies and lords from ladies vs butlers to black butler knows this. Even in Kamen Rider Kabuto and feudal japanese live action shows you see this.
Kuroko calling Misaka "my fair lady"? No offense but i don't think you understand their dynamic at all if thats your interpretation.
"but it’s 2018 and here I thought people would have left behind the whole “tailor your subs for my turboweeb needs or you’re worthless and you should kill yourself” by this point. "
I think you're confused , its more like 'stop using your own personal preference when making sub translations/stop using troll subs'. The subs are tailored to the fansubber tastes that go against accurate translation, THATS why we're complaining all the time.
"There’s nothing wrong with re-writing stuff though. Actually, that’s how you translate literature."
That's the problem. People simply don't spend enough time nor work with more people for constant editing and re-editing. Back in my day, fansub groups had even spent the effort to put editor's notes to educate the audience through small translations to teach the meaning of japanese words/slang that would be missed due to difference in culture. And that's what fans want. Accurate subs, not subs tailored to fansubbers' tastes.
That's a lot of writing for a Bad Opinion(tm). That's two places now you've written a wall of text containing uninformed information. Give it up and go pick up translation and interpretation majors at a reputable house of learning in your country/state. Maybe then you'll learn something.
Y'all need to learn to stop backseating people who know what they're doing.
Lol I don't mean any disrespect but when I point out the inaccuracy of your translation, now you're saying it's bad opinion/uninformed information. I'll have you know that the characters for older sister and younger sister in japanese is identical to chinese. Coming from Chinese culture, I've seen the use of the characters for older/younger sister and brothers are 100% identical. After seeing 800 titles of anime and this many years of fansubs, I can't see onee-sama as 'my lady' or "sissy". No one ever uses "sissy", save for a select few who are actually blood-related in the West, and its use has pretty much died out.
All the same I really do appreciate your effort in fansubbing and the upload.
Anyways you are pointing out that there are inaccuracy of translations for ojou and bochama that is littered throughout the internet. From where I stand, it seems you're the only person who seems to disagree with the current translations being used thus far in so many animated and live action titles from Japan. Since I speak from culture and you speak from a 'reputable' house of learning, I guess that either means my culture is wrong or you were self-taught or taught wrong.

"She later falls in love with Misaka Mikoto, calling her "Onee-sama" (big sister)-" (Wikia)
No native in japan would ever agree onee-sama = my lady, that is simply poor english translation. And neither will any chinese agree 'jie jie' (older sister) would be used the same way. The use of older sister as a title in chinese and japanese are perfectly identical to give higher form of respect, but not to a higher social status or class, titles for superiors are usually those of older age or generation.
You're talking about nothing but 1:1 translation. That's not how this works. Stop talking.
It's just as much writing as translation. WELCOME. TO. LOCALISATION.
I stand by my point. Now give up, you're not getting anywhere with this. Either watch or don't. I'm not gonna continue reading or responding to your misinformed rants.
