If you encounter any playback issues with a GJM release, please make sure you are using the most recent version of MPC and xysubfilter, or mpv.
It is highly recommended that you use mpv.
Please note that there may be minor rendering differences between MPC/xysubfilter and mpv.
Enjoy the release!
Because we're translating to English. This release is perfectly fine, and I enjoyed it plenty.
In short though: Deal with it. Upload edited subs marked as remake if you want it "fixed".
Yup. Mark your torrent as remake and don't use our tag directly (as that part's against Nyaa rules), and nobody can stop you.
Sure, we personally might think it's a bit worse than what we've done for the OVA, but again, we're fine with it and won't stop you. :P
Without honorifics, I'd have to call you just OkayJobMedia. But thanks anyway. Yuri is good (and so are honorifics. try to do something about that, huh?)
Not a topic for wider discussion here on Nyaa, it devolves into shitflinging. You can see some older torrents for proof of that.
But I can summarize our position as this: Ideological. A preference to lean toward localization-oriented translations that target English-only audiences.
A lot of us find translations that include concepts not found commonly (or at all) in the target language unpleasant, and in some cases, might go as far to even call them incomplete.
Sure, there are a few people in GJM who don't feel this way, and because of that the occasional project does release with some of those things included, but when given the choice, the majority of our staff produce these types of translations.
None of the staff on this project were remotely interested in that. Editing/TL decisions are also taken to account for their removal, so it's rarely ever as easy as "just put them back in" without making meaningful changes.
At that point, you're basically subbing episodes twice. Not worth for something most of our staff don't care about.
Well, I personally feel that if done poorly, localized translations more often than not come across as condescending and contrived more than anything else. Not to mention, English is a language that is spoken all over the world and can vary in its usage. Making it too localized will pretty much have the same alienating effect that a more literal translation would have or worse. At the very least, you know that the audience that would torrent something would be rather well acquainted with the peculiarities of Japanese culture, at least as it pertains to anime. Meh, agree to disagree. I'll just watch it raw as per usual.
Interestingly enough, I think most would be far more tolerant of the lack of honorifics or the more localized translations if there were other options available. Sadly, the only groups actually still around today that sub specials, movies or OVAs are ones like yourselves. I find it highly bizarre that, in this day and age, official subtitles and even dubs retain far more Japanese terms, cultural references and concepts than your average fansub. But I actually like TL notes and find them highly educational... so what do I know?
It is what it is, and we're set in our ways. Like you say, agree to disagree.
The best advice I can give (and I suggest this in the least rude way possible) is either just watching someone else or expanding fansubbing and subbing things yourselves. We're happy to teach newer subbers who drop by our Discord server. We don't require you to follow our mandates to learn from our experienced staff.
The short of it is we're unlikely to change, and the people who get vitriolic about it are honestly just wasting their times now. We've accepted certain people just won't watch our stuff. We spent time trying to argue with them and convince them otherwise. Doesn't work, just stresses both parties out.
If we didn't release other resolutions simultaneously, others aren't coming. This is animated close to 720, so it didn't justify a significant upscale to 1080.
I actually don't get the debate itself. I mean, honorifics or not, I tend to enjoy the subs either way, as long as they are accurate and digestible. On a side note, this was a pleasant surprise, thanks GJM
Just wanted to say thanks for the subs. This was the funniest yuru yuri has been in a while thanks to the amusing localization choices. Keep doing what you do cause it's great!
So why don't you use the FIRST names ALWAYS even when characters are using lastname?
That would be the logically consistent method if you were to follow your own advice of localaztion.
You can't just justify dropping honorifics by saying "concepts not found commonly (or at all) in the target language" since in 99% of the case, no one addresses other persons with their last names all the time either.
