Orphan fansubs presents the first English-subtitled version of the 1987 Nippon Animation TV special, *Hitomi no Naka no Shounen: 15 Shounen Hyouryuuki* (*The Boy in My Eye: 15 Boys Adrift*). An English dubbed version was released in 1991 under the title *The Story of Fifteen Boys*.
Based on Jules Verne's novel for children *Deux ans de vacances* (*Two Years' Vacation*), this show tells the adventures of 15 boys from a New Zealand boarding school who are shipwrecked on an island off the coast of South America. Encoded from an uncompressed VHS rip. For more information, see [this blog entry](https://collectr.blogspot.com/2020/03/hitomi-no-naka-no-shounen-15-shounen.html).
All Orphan releases are available from IRC bot Orphan|Arutha in channels #nibl or #news on irc.rizon.net.

@archivisth - Thanks for letting me know. That makes sense then.
There was also 1000 copies of DVD released, but I don't think it's easy to find one. Even in Japan.

I remember watching the Toei version as a kid. Compared to this it is less kid friendly with far more tension between the group since they split into two factions. There are also shooting and deaths and the mutineers are far more violent and the girl is far younger too. It also has more detailed character design, settings and animation, eg boys battling at sea during storm
I find the Toei version better but this adaptation is also decent.
