Well, you can compare with others - we even have a larger size than other teams. The size depends on the source material and “nature of the show”.

https://slow.pics/c/nEZwA57X DC bd vs aa (anti-aliasing). The Director's Cut edition is an upscale from 720 to 1080 using bilinear interpolation. This type of interpolation causes strong blurring of line art. We tried to fix it. In the 2016 version of our coding, other aa settings were used, which gave a sharper line art, but also a stronger ringing effect.

DC is indeed a blurrier master, and the blurriness is still there even after you account for the upscale kernel as far as I can tell. An ideal encode of this show may be one that splices the original BDs with the DC version. I have been trying to encode a version like that today, and it's a pain in the ass.

sorry to bother here, but the files aren't playing in VLC. It keeps showing me the error message: "Your input can't be opened:VLC is unable to open the MRL" also, tried opening it in MPV as well as Potplayer, but the files just won't open. Are the files corrupted on my end? Please help. :(

Check if your pc video playback the hevc 10 bit format. Download and install the necessary video codecs.

Yea I can't get these videos to play for the life of me. Originally the videos were playing but I'd get these like black stuttering frames. Like the video itself was blinking. So I downloaded a codec pack as suggested here (I've never had any issues with HEVC or any other video encode before, but figured I might as well try it). Resulted in VLC crashing either instantly, or within 10 seconds of the video playing. So, uninstalled the codec pack, and then went and made sure VLC was upgraded to the latest 3.0 version. Now I'm still getting crashes and can't play the episodes.

Alright, I'm contradicting myself rather quickly, but I'm pretty sure I found the solution after lots of repeated trial and error, so I figure I'd share in case anyone running VLC was having the same stuttering and crashing issues as me. The root of the problem seemed to be that VLC by default, uses your CPU's integrated graphics to play the video. This normally isn't an issue because video playback isn't demanding, but x265 actually hits your CPU pretty hard. (again, this is the first time I've encountered this problem and its not the first time I've played HEVC x265 videos either. Apparently Re: Zero is needy). So what was happening to me is that as soon as I played an episode, my CPU would get immediately throttled until the video crashed. The solution is to make VLC run off your GPU instead where there's no chance of it bottle-necking. Here's how: 1. Go into your Windows 10 settings 2. Select Display from the choices on the left 3. Scroll down to the bottom of the display settings and select graphics settings 4. It will ask you to select a program to add to the list. Hit browse, and locate VLC's program folder (it should be C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe by default) Add. vlc.exe to the list 5. Now that it's added, you'll ave an options tab. Click it and you'll have 3 choices: 1. Let windows decide 2. Power saving (uses integrated graphics) 3. High performance (uses GPU). Select High performance and you're good to go. I managed to get halfway through the first directors cut episode with zero issues (which is a hell of a lot longer than the 5-10 seconds I was getting before), so I paused it to pass along my results here. If anything changes or crashes start happening again I'll post something else.

Why not just unpack mpv somewhere and use it? Probably `mpv --hwdec yourfile.mkv` is the way to watch it with hardware decoding (if possible).

Noticed some inconsistencies in the subs in a few places. One of the beginning episodes used Puck, then used Pack once, then it's stayed as Puck. And in episode 7 Felix's name was spelt as Felis once.

Jensen what happened here bro? There is so much banding everywhere. I can also see mild ringing but I can ignore that. The banding is too much though, especially in dark scenes. Also not enough bitrate? This seems really blurry for some reason.

https://slow.pics/c/2DzBaLYj so much banding? All BD versions of Re Zero contain many stripes due to their specific lighting and studio approach. I suppressed this streak as thoroughly as possible. In some scenes, you may see [green or blue elements](https://ibb.co/dkQ3ZVB) in the textures. This is what remains after suppressing the streaks, and this is normal as it is not possible to completely remov. Anyway yourself can make a comparison with the source material and understand what I am talking about.
