~~e: May 21, I could have done things a lot better in hindsight, but I don't think the issues are bad enough for me to care enough to go back and fix them using the same source. If a better BD ever comes out I may make a new likely Dual Audio version with likely quite a bit more bitrate and much better filtering.~~
~~e: 2022, I will redo this at some point in the future, hopefully sooner rather than later.~~
e: Mar 23, I likely will never get to redoing this, while I think it'd be an interesting project, there's so many things I'd work on instead, but that's alright since there's someone else who is more passionate about Inuyasha and creating the best possible release for it than I am. They're working on finding ways to create that said best possible release, hopefully if all goes well there will be a release from them eventually.
Encoded from Spanish BD. The US BD has original songs, but the rest of it is ~~bad~~ not good.

@megusto some of the openings/endings were changed due to licensing reasons on the Spanish blu-ray, so unfortunately a few of the openings are changed. The US blu-ray which has only released up to episode 27 currently, does have the original first opening and hopefully will have all the originals. I may do v2s when 0-34 for the first opening, and any other openings that were replaced in the Spanish blu-ray in the future if I can get access to them.

This is LITERALLY the best encode of inuyasha so far. To this date at least.
I've compared DmonHiro & Fullmetal's encodes, and this one is much more superior than Fullmetal's, and a just tad better than DmonHiro's.
The cropping lines are a tiny tiny tiny bit narrower though than those of other encodes, but it's not that much noticeable until you focus and compare.
Props to the encoder sorrow.
@ShuOuma Thanks.
For the cropping I chose to crop to true 4:3 1080p which is 1920x1440, the content area was, however, 1920x1444 for most frames. The 2 extra lines on the sides were often darkened or blurred so I chose to stick to true 4:3 and crop them out.
If there are ever noticeably better BDs for this I'll probably redo it as this was my first project trying to use VapourSynth instead of AviSynth and get more into filtering, I now know mistakes I made and issues I could have fixed and choices that could have been better, but don't really want to do the hundreds of hours of encoding this took again for mostly minor issues.
I honestly cannot comprehend how anyone could rip a BD (which is AVC 1080p) and encode it, which by definition is lessening its quality (regardless of codec), instead of just remuxing the m2ts into MKV (or whatever container can accept it FULLY), losing nothing. The only time h265 should ever be used for a disc rip is a remux from UHD, which is already h265. The absolute ignorance of weaboos.
@toiletglasses I'm going to assume you're a troll, or really don't understand about encoding. Remuxes with untouched video are fine but at the same time they are massive and can be reduced in size greatly by a number of times and still remain visually transparent, or with filtering to fix production errors, or general video issues like banding, and things like rescaling, where you reverse upscaling of a lower than 1080p source back to its native resolution and can either leave it that way for more efficient encoding or reupscale with a higher quality scaler than was originally used like NNEDI3 or FSRCNNX to get both a sharper and cleaner image. My targets with my encoding is not transparency since even reaching that generally means you end up using a lot more bitrate than if you just target something even just "5-10% visually worse", which I find to be personally acceptable, I like to try to reach a good balance between quality and efficiency.

unrelated to the reply I just made but

guess I was a bit fucked up when I wrote this, obviously, I meant 1440x1080 and 1444x1080
Nice! Best quality encode so far! Too bad its filtered... but oh well...
I see crf=18.6 used for cel episodes and then crf=15.6 for digital episodes...
Is there a reason for that? ^^
Or did you just saw how amazingly small the file sizes were at digital episodes with crf=18.6 and decided to bloat them with crf=15.6... file size doubled... zero visual impact? ^^
@MrBug past me was retarded and literally knew next to nothing about using vapoursynth so the filtering for this is pretty bad. Ideally the SPA BDs do need filtering, but don't need as much denoising, instead just lighter masked adapted denoising, detail masked debanding, some line AA or similar to fix aliasing from bad deinterlacing, and some sort of grain restoration regraining for areas and frames where the grain in the BD is extremely blocky, as well as fixing the gamma/levels being too bright.
Past me however was dumb did dumb things in filtering in the effort of trying to dumbly reach 750MB/ep average, and not even the x265 settings were great so darks are extremely bitstarved, but at least that's not super noticeable unless you're viewing on a screen with terrible black levels and contrast or using gamer features like black equalization or dark boosters. For the digital episodes, 18.6 left them very bitstarved so I lowered it with to 15.6, which resulted in better quality, it's hard to even say they're "big" because they're only 462MB/ep average, which really is about all they need, though they needed much better filtering than what I did, they needed better debanding, and they're most likely rescaleable so rescaling could greatly improve the line and general quality because from memory they looked like bilinear upscales, which I somewhat fixed just by throwing AA over it to at least reduce the aliasing thankfully.
I do want to redo this TV series in the future, but properly do it with better filtering and encoding, but I ideally don't want to redo it until hopefully a better BD comes out because both the current BDs are bad, the US has the original songs, but other irreparable issues, SPA has somewhat repairable issues but I'd have to splice in the original songs and still have the more annoying issues like the BDs being bitstarved causing ugly grain blocking and other things
So now that the Japanese BD Boxes have started coming out (the last one is scheduled for May) with 16:9 cropped main episodes but 4:3 OPs/EDs (wtf?), will you consider revisiting the Spanish BD with the missing songs spliced in? It doesn't seem like you're going to get a better source anytime soon sadly.
@ShuOuma late on the reply, but in all likelihood I probably won't be redoing this, I personally just lack the interest in taking on a project of this scale and trying to get it up to the standards I try hold myself to now when there's many other things I also want to work on and only so much time. The amount of work this would need is immense on all of the video, audio, and subtitle sides. There's someone else who is more passionate than I on this that is working on trying to make the best possible Inuyasha release, and I trust their ability to do so more than my own. If it goes well there should be a release from them in the future, no idea on what timescale since they're also working on releasing Gintama in batches, which should give a hint to who.
