are there players that can load subs that are separated from the mkvs like this? i only know of some that loads them from the same directory but that way you wont have any custom fonts
To Valid & Herkz:
At least (but not at last) MPC-HC and PotPlayer can do it, you only need to write typical subdirs into the config ("the same dir" for the player equally to any another dir). Uploader just do it for guys, who don't need "russian" or "english" tracks.
[mpv can load both external subs and audio](https://nyaa.si/view/1252943#com-11)
for fonts I just install them, although if there was a way to load subs from the same directory I would use that
There are advantages to this way of distribution:
+ you can easily edit/update the subs or have multiple subtitles without having to mux everytime
+ what this means is there will be no v2/3/4 due to missing fonts, or updated script/typesetting. just replace the subs. found a typo, fix it yourself easily
+ even if you change subs you can still seed the video files
+ gives a choice to the user if they want the eng audio
Disadvantages:
+ inconvenient on TVs but then again TVs don't support .ass so why not
+ you have to install fonts
+ muxed releases are convenient to just download-and-play
+ you might need to sync the subtitles to the video manually
+ typesetting might not match to the encode
thought so.. but its interesting that there is capability of loading non installed fonts from a mkv but not from a directory. i cant think of any technical reasons for such limits
