This is my personal, "best of all worlds, and then some" release of the 2014 anime _Ping Pong The Animation_, a project that aims to be _the_ best way to enjoy what I consider the most impactful, incredible piece of animated media of all time. It is a combination of the hard work made possible by many other people, plus hundreds of hours of meticulous revision by myself over the past two years. Unlike most any other release of any captioned media, **these subtitles aim to be a part of the visuals of the show itself** rather than simply a layer of text laid atop video, where the lettering strives to follow the style & spirit of both the animation and the original manga paneling to which the show pays near-constant homage. The typesetting in this release is comprehensive and extremely detailed, based on the fansub group WhyNot?'s 2014 as-it-was-airing-on-broadcast-TV episode releases, with further creative modification inspired by Omeiht's "Dekinai" release of the show. Video is from philosophy-raws' JP BD release, with audio (Japanese only) in Opus 2.0 format transcoded from FLAC. The script is largely an **original translation**. It is based on a combination of WhyNot?'s version and the official Funimation subtitles, heavily edited, with many chunks of dialogue across all episodes re-translated from scratch. (I especially put a lot of research into all the table tennis-related vocabulary and references!) Honorifics are left in. The opening, ending, and both insert songs notably use original translations, as all previous versions have significant errors or are based on misheard lyrics. I've re-timed signs and much of the dialogue, and worked to ensure a high degree of consistency across the script, e.g. in repeated motifs/phrases, episode titles, use of italics, color matching, font choices, and subtitle positioning. I hope Masaaki Yuasa and Taiyō Matsumoto would be proud. Viva!   Script: eli (based on WhyNot) Typesetting: eli (based on WhyNot/Dekinai) Song TL: eli Song styling: Commie [OP], WhyNot [ED], eli [Inserts] Timing, QC: eli   (Screenshots, MediaInfo, trailer & translation notes/references at the "Information" link above.)

@Interruptor Thanks! I chose to keep the Japanese hardsubs during scenes when Chinese is spoken just because I wanted to base this directly on the Japanese BDs. I kind of like that the translated text (Chinese-to-Japanese, I mean, which then has again-translated English subtitles below it) is on-screen as part of the video, as opposed to nothing with English subtitles displaying during those scenes like any other dialogue – kind of thematically matches the way the manga has all of Kong + his coach's speech bubbles with double outlines, too, as if a Japanese translation has been placed on top of the Chinese bubble. Also that was the way I've always watched the show and I guess grew attached to that presentation style. So just a personal decision, really! Do feel free to mux your own version for personal use if you'd like; you can grab just the subs + fonts from the page linked in the Information section up top.
Excellent work! I work on subtitles too. Usually with French, Russian, Brazilian, Spanish animated films where you can only get computer translated English with bad timing. I change bad English to good English and retime many, many lines. Takes FOREVER! Great job and a fantastic animated series.
Understandable, thanks again. And you should definitely give a try to the tatami galaxy. It also deserves a better release than the ones currently available, and it's slightly better than PPTA in my list. Both series are real masterpieces.
I'll second the above

Someday! I'm planning to work on Kaiba next (no promises for how long that'll take… mostly only translation there, no intricate typesetting, at least). I did a fixed version of the F-B Ureshii release a while back, but that was before (ironically *right* before) the Discotek USBD came out – which, while it was was pretty badly translated overall with weird stilted and borderline-ungrammatical phrasings, *was* at least based on the actual, official Japanese script (especially helpful for all the made-up words), versus the fansubs which were just done using transcribed audio from the TV airing each week (and thus had a lot of inaccuracies, even if inconsequential – it's about the principle of the matter!!) And that BD also was the first time the show got released in 1080p too. So I'd like to "combine" those two TLs (while referring to the original Japanese script too) and make some sort of nice, touched-up & proper release for that show. If anyone cares, that's what's on the unofficial mental agenda!
>The script is largely an original translation. It is based on a combination of WhyNot?'s version and the official Funimation subtitles, heavily edited, with many chunks of dialogue across all episodes re-translated from scratch. (I especially put a lot of research into all the table tennis-related vocabulary and references!) could've saved yourself a lot of work if you just used commie as a base instead. not only did it not have numerous TL errors like whynot's and funi's scripts, the table tennis vocab was already all correct.

I checked out Commie's and wasn't a big fan overall, but did reference their script from time to time to see how they dealt with stuff. Pretty sure they used Funi as a base, per the {comments} left in their .ass files… I don't remember any egregious TL errors in *any* script (except for the OP/ED), but I obviously started a while ago so who knows anymore. :^) And AFAIK no one got the table tennis vocab entirely correct (hell, including me probably, if you're being nitpicky). More importantly, though, WhyNot's typesetting style blew Commie's out of the water, and that was the most important factor for me. But yeah, I didn't necessarily aim to optimize the work, as it was just for fun, obviously took a crazy amount of time off-and-on, and really I just wanted to make a version I'd be satisfied with and would be happy with showing to some friends/family too.
nah, we actually used cr's subs as a base because it was softsubbed. ping pong was actually a weird show that was simulcast by funi in the us and cr and europe and they both did their own translations. the problem is neither of them were very good and had mistakes, so i had a translator TLC it by picking the better/correct lines from both subs (or in a few cases, when both got it wrong, just TLing it himself). this show also aired back when the old nyaa site reviewed subs for A+, and that included checking both whynot and commie for TL accuracy. whynot lost because their subs had a decent amount of mistakes (mostly just not fixed from the simulcast subs). not sure what the typesetting has to do with it since you can easily combine it with any subs for the dialogue.
Thanks for all the hard work. Ping pong is one of my favorite too, used to be in my top 10

Oh, weird, I was always wondering what was going on with the dual Funi+CR licensing. Re: "what the typesetting has to do with it," because it's a lot easier and more natural – for me – to start with good typesetting and change the script (just editing plaintext, really) as opposed to starting with a good script and changing all the typesetting. Though along with the modified script, the TS is heavily modified if not totally re-done most places anyway too so whatever, lol.
This looks like a great release! I'm definitely going to rewatch with these subtitles + SCY video.

Thanks! FYI, you can grab just the subtitles + fonts from the link in the information field.
I gave it a watch, it's really good even though I prefer commie's font. I hope to see more Yuasa's releases from you in the not too distant future :) I'll probably leave extensive feedback one day, too. I also found Kaiba to be extremely boring and downright bad years ago when I fully watched it, perhaps I'll give it a rewatch when your future release drops :)

Thank you! Feedback would be very welcome, here or elsewhere suited better to longer conversations. Yeah, will someday get around to the Kaiba v2, maybe next year (especially as All The Anime is releasing a Collector's Edition BD of it in January) – would like to, I'm in the mood to re-watch it soon anyway, and it definitely wouldn't be as a big of a project as this one. Someone just messaged me about it the other day actually so it's been on my mind. Glad to hear there's interest, and thanks again. :)
You really poured your soul into this. I'm beyond glad that the sentiment of creating meticulous subs like these is still alive, and that I was able to find it. Fantastic work, really man.

Thanks so much, madaosoul. You're right, I did. :) That really means a lot to me, and made me really happy to read. So glad you enjoyed!
SCY's encode looks a little better but these subs are too autistic for me not to download so I'll just watch this one instead.
