SHAW BROTHERS RARITIES - PACK 1
There are 5 movies from the legendary Hong Kong movie studio, The Shaw Brothers, in this pack. All of them are .mkv format, in widescreen, and in 480p, with English subtitles that vary from excellent to good to HK bootleg quality.
The titles included in this pack are as follows:
1--"Fangs of the Cobra"
circa 1977. A young man inherits his grandfather's winery in rural China and goes to take charge, but in the process falls in love with a young village girl, whose only friend has been a snake she's turned into a pet. Complications ensue when the young man's cousin and her would-be boyfriend plot to crush this budding romance, so the young man can marry the cousin (like, eww) and solidify the ownership of the winery. This movie has a little bit of everything--drama, romance, action, and even some hanky-panky, so it definitely isn't SFW.
2--"Ghost Eyes"
circa 1974. A troubled young woman gets new contact lenses, but the lenses are possessed by an evil, murderous spirit, who can take control of her at any time and make her do terrible things. The optometrist who gave her the lenses uses them to treat the poor woman like his slave, and it's up to her fledgling boyfriend to help the woman fight off the evil inside her "ghost eyes." This one is really eerie and has a super-creepy atmosphere, so if you like your horror/suspense films with a dark setting and mood, then you'll like this one.
3--"Killers on Wheels"
circa 1976. This is the one oddity in the Shaw Brothers catalog--it's basically an attempt to cash in on the biker movie craze that was taking place in America in the 1970's. A very young Danny Lee (who later starred in John Woo's "The Killer") takes his girl to a seaside town for a vacation and gets mixed up in a murder committed by the local biker gang, who proceed to terrorize Danny and company for the next 75 minutes. This rip is from the French DVD release (the only DVD release of this film at all), and has burned-in French subs, but also has English softsubs that appear ABOVE the French ones, so you're losing half the image. You have been warned!
4--"Kiss and Kill"
circa 1967. When the first James Bond film came out in the states, other countries tried to capitalize on its success by also making spy films, and this one is the rarest of the Shaw Brothers' spy entries. A young Chinese man returns to Hong Kong to find his father had invented a device that could knock down enemy planes with radio waves. Naturally, every evil organization wants their hands on this device, but our hero is smart and has some neat gadgets he uses to keep himself (and his dad's invention) from falling into the hands of evil. This is ripped from a Hong Kong bootleg DVD with burned-in English subtitles that aren't too bad, say for a few typos here and there.
5--"The Big Holdup"
circa 1975. The Shaw Brothers saw an emerging market for crime and heist dramas and made this, which also features Danny Lee, as one of four desperate men who rob a bank and make off with a ton of loot. The problem? They didn't plan a very effective getaway, and betrayal, desperation, and depression set in as the four men battle cops, other crooks, and their own inner demons. This one is a stellar piece of crime/action filmmaking, way before that became the staple of Hong Kong cinema, and the human drama that plays out between the four leads is believable and hits you right in the gut.
I hope you all enjoy this collection of rare Shaw Brothers films, and you can expect more on the way!
EDIT: The English softsubs may not turn on automatically when you play the movie; you might have to go into your player settings and click on the subs you want manually. Just thought I'd give everyone a heads-up!
