Well folks here it is. 6 months in the making, but she's done. I started initial prep work on this back in January, however me literally deleting everything on my PC threw a wrench in things. That plus a few other projects I had going on outside this slowed me down.
Encoding work:
This was a doozy. These DVDs suffered from most of the same issues Pollyanna did. Thankfully it was all 480i, so I was able to get creative with deinterlacers. Initially I use VIVTC for 1-5 and QTGMC for 6+. 1-5 were 30fps and the rest were variable frame rate, so I couldn't them decimate like I normally would. However QTGMC introduced some chroma artifacts. I eventually realized I could just use stand alone VFM, but at that point I had to literally re-encode the entire damn thing. That was the other big delay.
Moving on from that, I had to get creative on dot crawl. I wound up using SSQI, dotkill, and selective use of Temporal denoising/MLdegrain. FUN FACT did you know dotkill can trigger a massive memory leak? I didn't! To clarify it was only an issue because I was scene filtering. Something about that combo caused issues. My virtual memory wound up in excess of 150GB. I dropped it and added Tcomb for the rest of the run.
We also managed to get our hands on the old C1 subs. That made the project 100% easier. A thank you to Collectr for those.
Thus this release contains two English sub tracks:
The default track is the DarkWispers track, which is a fully retimed and edited version of C1’s subs.
The secondary track is the C1 track, which is the C1 script roughly synced to the video, with everything else just as was in the original release.
The C1 track also contains the original fansub credits while the DarkWispers track features an updated set of credits for the newer version.
We’ve also included the Japanese Subs for those who want them.
I'll leave the nitty gritty of the subs to Darkonius, but from what I gather it wasn't that bad. Mostly re-timing shenanigans.
Peter Pan was a breeze to work on compared to previous WMT projects thanks to having the scripts instead of having to OCR, and thanks to the higher quality of the subs provided. The biggest hurdle was honestly the difference in audio sync between the ancient XviD encode and our new encodes, which made retiming slightly more complicated.
C1's original translation was solid, with very few actual mistranslations. Still there were a few dropped or mistimed lines, and of course the weebisms (itadakimasu, extraneous honorifics). I've also made some general edits to make it sound nicer, and fixed the few typos that made it through QC.
1-30 were additionally revised to fix mistakes that slipped through (or were created) on the first editing pass, and typesetting has been slightly changed as well. Nothing groundbreaking, just making the release look nicer and more consistent.
The Kanketsu Ban is coming soon too, so stay tuned for that, and for the next WMT project, similarly facilitated by Collectr's donation of old C1 scripts.
