If this isn't anime, Afro Samurai, the FLCL sequels, The Big O season 2, Oban Star Racers, IGPX and Ulysses 31 also aren't. But all of those are still accepted here/in places like AniDB.
The English dub, even though it's the same actors as the movie.... are TERRIBLE. Watch it with Japanese dub. I loved the movie, but the voice acting they did here is abysmal. Loved the anime though.
MAL is pretty retarded with their decision. They fucking got Korean animation, Chinese animation and even fucking Batman Gotham Knight. But somehow they draw the line at Scott Pilgrim?
@unlukomaluko MAL admins are literally the cliché of the weaboo claiming anything with the slighest western intervention is not anime. Except if they like the show lol.
It's because of idiots like @czar that we end up in these discussions. You don't even mention the most comparable series to this, Neo Yokio, and the only one of your examples that is even remotely similar is Afro Samurai.
Many 80s cartoons were made by Japanese studios, including Disney shows (TMS). That's not enough to be considered an anime. Is ThunderCats a anime?
It should be deleted, but we know the mods will allow it because they don't care. Even American live action was allowed here.
Anyway the "what is anime and what is not" debate has been done over and over. There is no undeniable rule. It can't be country of origin (because of collaborations), it can't be art style or animation method, it can't be targeted audience. In the end it's up to you to draw the line.
@LoliSub American animation isn't even allowed on here, they delete japanese dubs of things like the recent Spider-Man animated movies and Boondocks. They did leave the jp dub of Transformers EarthSpark, but I think the mods were just too busy looking for scott pilgrim uploads to delete and missed that one. Now that I've mentioned I bet it goes down the drain soon.
@The_Daytona_500 I never looked closely into Neo Yokio's production, but if it's really similar to Scott Pilgrim (every single aspect of the production happened in Japan outside of the original script and the voice acting for the movie actors) than it should be considered anime too. Scott Pilgrim, at least, doesn't work at all like american cartoons that outsource to Japan. There's no american animator drawing storyboards and shipping them to Japan so that Japanese animators draw the animation and then ship them back to the US to be finalized. All aspects of the actual production of Scott Pilgrim happened in Japan. That's what really matters.
i mean there are chinese and korean shit on anidb as well and i question why the chingfuckinchong we got bulgogis and kimchis all up in the lao gan ma
honestly they shouldn't be there buttfuck it
@czar I'm actually in agreement with you, I just hate that the people arguing for it keep bringing up examples that are totally different from scott pilgrim (you didn't bring them up but I've seen Cyberpunk and Star Wars: Visions brought up which are just awful comparisons). There's a bit more western staff that just those from the credits, but at the very least you would consider it an American/Japanese coproduction, and nobody argues against considering Chinese/Japanese coproductions like To Be Hero or Bloodivores (or Oban like you mentioned) as anime so I don't see why this would be different.
The chinese and korean stuff gets to be here when people upload it, though. And it's not even the japanese dubs. Just search the non english translated anime section and you'll see a lot of chinese CG stuff
This site also has those shows Madhouse did for Marvel (like Wolverine or Iron Man) and Disk Wars Avengers
@The_Daytona_500 Some of the stuff I've mentioned is because I've seen multiple people (and it seems to be a MAL rule too) say that for something to be anime it has to be specifically aimed at Japanese audiences. Stuff like The Big O s2, FLCL sequels and IGPX were explicitly not that, but still considered anime, and that was what I was trying to get at by mentioning them alongside stuff like Afro Samurai. I was covering all bases with shows that are considered anime, but "break" one rule or another of those databases without problems.
-All the creative staff, apart from the screenwriters, are all people working in the anime industry.
###### Director: Abel Gongora (founding member of Science Saru)
###### Assistant director: Takuya Fujikura
###### Characters designs: Shuuhei Handa, Masamichi Ishiyama, Shouko Nishigaki
###### Art direction: Takayuki Kotani
###### Colour design: Satoshi Hashimoto, Narumi Konno
###### Animation producer: Kouhei Sakita
-All the episodes were storyboarded, directed and animated inhouse, with the Japanese voice over being the original (that's how episode directors worked, with seiyuu and the Japanese script first).
-The show was targeted to anime fans (thus the japanese audience), and has been described as an anime by basically everyone who worked on it.
-The only arguments against this show being an anime can be easily counterbalanced by examples of similar shows being widely accepted as anime (Cyberpunk Edgerunners, Afro Samurai, FLCL sequels, etc)
@LainProxy ANN also has "Scott Pilgrim (Canadian manga)" (alongside of course many, many other western TV/film productions with very limited JP influence) so I don't think they're a good frame of reference here
Though I'm on the page this should be considered anime
As if MAL was ever a good reference for anything. It's a Japanese adaptation of a Western work, produced in Japan by a Japanese studio. Shit was done countless times and this is just another example of that.
@Lemonov except it is not. It's a primarily North American production with American scripts, American music, and, according to the executive producer, an original English voice over. You can fight over how much creative control was in the hands of the Japanese team that handled animation, but it's fundamentally different from something like the Marvel shows (e.g, Iron Man) which were done in collaboration with Marvel, but the production was handled by Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan and Madhouse, with Japanese scripts, Japanese music, an original Japanese dub and its original airing on Animax in Japan.
Now Neo Yokio, which is widely considered to fall outsid of anime, is a good comparison. American production, American script, American music, English voice over and clearly targeted at America, but animation was credited to Production IG and Deen. Their work included character designs and storyboarding, with most of the actual animating being outsourced to South Korea.
Now whether this one counts as anime will depend on what's actually true about the production, how much creative control was with Science Saru, whether the English dub is actually the original dub (as O'Malley states) or if it's the Japanese one since they apparently animated based on it (which I'm not sure where that information comes from), etc. etc. Based on the information that was available when MAL decided whether to include it, it was another Neo Yokio. I'm inclined to believe that AniDB will judge similarly (or not at all, leaving it on pending for a year - I've got 100% anime sitting in their approvals since 2022), but you never know.
@Lumpstud
@Lemonov Yes
There are many anime that are co-productions with other countries too, or have producers from other countries, this is super normal, since the 70s. MyAnimeList has a bunch of ignorant administrators.
If you take these things into consideration, Afro Samurai should not be in the DataBase even though it was made by Japanese people but was first shown on Spike TV, which from what I researched is not a Japanese channel.
The simple fact that it is 100% made in Japan makes it anime. If that's not enough, then does it mean that a lot of anime nowadays isn't anime because they hire animators from all over the world? Having people from other parts of the world in a project does not negate the fact that it is mostly done in Japan. This is very simple to understand.
@ DmonHiro
You're right, I'm watching the pilot episode with the English dub and it really sounds utterly boring and uninteresting. I'll watch in Japanese with subs.
