Thank you for a great job of making the best subs for this anime. <3 In ep 2 the opening had 2 rows of romaji and 2 rows of translation - it was covering the pictures too much ---> in ep 3 it's NOW PERFECT. (And the ending's romaji and translation looks better too.) Just 1 thing I'm not happy about - translating nicknames. Why is Mike changed into Mittens and Miketaro into Mickey Mouse? I thought that sounded so stupid in the official manga translation, and now that I've heard how the nicknames sound in Japanese, I think even more that they sound too stupid when "translated". I mean, you aren't translating Nacchin. Why translate Mike and Miketaro? T___T This reminds me of when I was reading the official German translation of the Sailor Moon manga and Usagi was translated as Bunny. Like, WTF? Who translates names? Anyway, if you think Mittens and Mickey Mouse is a good choice and you want to stick with it, there's 1 line where you did it wrong. (09:48 - "Mike-chan" --- should be Mittens.) (If you ever feel like changing the nicknames, I'll gladly rewatch the episodes and write all the times where the nicknames come up. - I already wrote for myself where Mike and Miketaro are used in ep 3, I can do the same for Nacchin and any other nickname that maybe comes later in the anime.) [Salchow] release is by far the best so far. But I wanted to point out some translations that sound wrong to me or which the characters just aren’t saying. Hope you don’t mind. Feel free to ignore them if you think they are insignificant. I did it for ep 2 too. ^^; (Ep 1 was pure perfection, so no need for that one. <3)

We'll recheck a couple of those lines, but most of them are fine as-is, just different ways of conveying essentially the same thing Can you clarify what you mean by `03:09 -> the title of the episode is written twice in English`? This sounds like it might be a player issue, so please test with MPV if you're not using it

I agree with the previous person, the Mittens doesn't work in here, Mike is her name, not Mittens. Mickey Mouse works I guess, but only when her name is Mike and not Mittens. Really hope you stick with real names and not weird translations for future episodes and batch

To everyone lurking the many nyaa comment bot feeds: these people have access to nyaa accounts and many of you do not. How does that make you feel?

I want to say something in as few words as possible about translation criticism. Subtitle scripts often have terrible mistakes. There are mistakes that ruin lines, that ruin scenes, that ruin episodes, and even that ruin series/movies. You could argue that Aniplex's botched SAO Progressive movie 1 translation is an example of that last one. In order to get people to listen to you regarding a translation criticism, you should ideally limit yourself to errors that ruin scenes/episodes. Which is to say, they make it harder to understand something about a character's state of mind, motivation, views, etc., or about the flow of events in the story. Some of the criticisms in NingyoHime's last post seem to be in that vein, which is great. It's very useful for someone to argue that a translation missed the point of a scene or dialogue exchange. Don't bury your important complaints under ticky-tack issues that don't have a broader effect on the scene. There are a lot of those in this thread and in past comment threads for this show.

In general, you should use Hulu as the base for the TL as that's at least a proper TL, though it could use some improving. DSNP should not be relied upon for TL at all as it's dubtitles and is entirely inaccurate regularly.

GeeYu is the translator, not DSNP. DSNP is useful in that it has great personality and can help convey some phrases better

Idk man some of the "ticky-tack issues" are valid. Hearing one thing and reading another in those instances creates enough dissonance that it diminishes enjoyment. Who out of the people that are actually downloading and watching these releases benefits from this kind of shit? Unless it's just some circle jerk clever editing thing going on. Same can be said about dropping honorifics. What happens down the line if someone dropping honorifics or something is used as an actual plot device. Again, considering who actually watches these releases, what is the point?

from my relatively limited experience watching anime with Japanese audio and English subtitles, they already don’t match perfectly a lot of the time because names and other subjects are pretty often said at the end of the lines in Japanese, but at their start in English translations. These differences in grammar already create quite the dissonance because you’ll read the name seconds before you actually hear it. I’ve just learned to cope with this inconvenience because I occasionally chose to consume this medium of entertainment from a completely different language/culture in its original language. If you want the Japanese audio to match your comprehension as much as possible just learn Japanese well enough and watch anime raw. Not everyone who wants to watch an anime understands what -san, -chan, -sensei and whatever other honorifics mean and I think we should cater more to the normie majority rather than the smaller but much vocal weeb minority. And no, not just weebs pirate fansubs from Nyaa.

Conveying an increasing level of familiarity and decreasing level of distance between two characters is only possible through the concept of Japanese honorifics. Barbaric languages such as English cannot capture such nuance for the people that speak it do not have the intellect or emotional intelligence to feel these feelings to begin with. As such, ways to convey this kind of information in English were never invented.

Bro what are you yapping about? If you have examples of issues beyond what’s already been mentioned, then write them here instead of shitting out platitudes and hypotheticals. This release is significantly better than whatever Hulu’s shat out, which borders on incomprehensible at times. You can’t directly translate Japanese to English, and if you try, you end up with slop. Liberties have been taken here to actually read like good English with decent personality, without taking it to the extremes that the dub has done. And honorifics are so unimportant it’s not even funny
