This is a HUGE improvement over the DVD. There's much more detail, better colors, and better audio. The only downside is Bandai took the grain out back and shot it. This is why the file size is so small, even at crf 20.
Most everything is 720p, as 16mm film typically doesn't benefit from 1080p, especially when they've scrubbed any trace of film grain away. The promos and commercials for the B;u-ray set have all sorts of digital stuff, so I've left those at 1080p.
Main reason I do 720p for 16mm stuff is I keep finding the only lost detail from downscaling is the grain. And I don't care if the grain loses detail. And with the overkill DNR, there isn't even any grain to lose detail.
I'd trust FortMax who was been encoding stuff for years now, she'd know the proper things to do this stuff with. Also, not everyone likes HEVC. I'd take this over any other source.
