@ShikiS
I agree that it may look too saturated for someone, and yes, it's definitely nothing like the source. But since when has the blurry and noisy picture become better than a clean and sharp one? And sharper doesn't always mean oversharpened, like in this case.
Anyway, thank you for the explanation, now I understand that the original BD source is really just an upscale.
P.S. Here is a little game for you, guess which of these screenshots is from this 1080p BDRip and which is from 720p HDTVRip (I upscaled it using only Photoshop Image Resize, Automatic Resample, no additional tweaks):

to robeus:
It's not a upscale. It's originally drawn by the animator using their pen pixel and hardness. If you are a fan of TRIGGER Inc., you will see. Those filters Moozzi2 added you also can add them in the player. If you added them when you encoded the rip, it will turn to be an irreversible disaster. If you like Moozzi2's style, just go ahead. But I believe that not everyone like Moozzi2's style. Like me, I more like the original animator's style.
@curry
I'm not recommending anything, just trying to understand how things work with the help of more experienced people.
I started asking questions when finally I found 1080p BDRip, but faced with the fact that the picture is absolutely identical to the previously viewed 720p HDTVRip. And I'm sure that it is impossible to draw in a way that the result will look like a stretched version of the same downscaled image. Just try to draw anything on 1080p canvas, then resize it to 720p and then upscale back to 1080p. It will look different, no matter how you draw and what style you have. That's how raster graphics works and you can't bypass it. And I didn't even mention digital noise.
If guys at TRIGGER do this on purpose, then it's quite strange, but I can't blame them for their style.
Yes, it's probably bad idea to apply filters when you encoding, but it doesn't always mean that if it's not identical to original then it is a garbage or disaster.
Yes, it is not always a disaster. It could improve quality of very bad source. But to many cases, I have noticed that oversharpen may make it looking good on static picture but has risk on causing unreasonable fluctuation on translation scene. It is definitely no need to do these things on LWA BD. This would be Arduous But Fruitless, because Moozzi2 he uses sharpeness almost over his every work. PS: High saturation makes the color vivid at cost of details lost in dark area.
@curry
Finally something I can completely understand and agree with. Now I know what could be potentially wrong with such filtered releases, thanks to you.
Anyway, call me blind, but there is no difference visible to the naked eye between this 1080p and other HDTV rips on Full HD monitor, neither standard IPS, nor good TN.
Maybe I need professional true 10-bit display with wide color gamut for 1000+ dollars? And even then, I doubt that this will help with the blurriness (and this is definitely not just softness).
@Robeus
This release is an upscale, that is why it looks blurry. According to Asenshi (from their BD release):
"the show is produced in 806p (the character lineart, that is) so the upscale was reversed and reupscaled back to 810p. (mainly because 806p is a weird resolution.)"
@DelishCaek
It all makes sense now, thank you. I will continue to believe my eyes :)
It's really strange that they drew in such resolution, though, but that's another story.
@futagen
I can't seem to get the subs for this to work in MPC-HC, they work fine in VLC though. I too would have preferred .ass subs for this reason but I still appreciate the upload.
So after watching about 5 episodes I have to say I really like this anime, but these subs are terrible, this is coming from someone with pretty low standards for subs. Many missing and misspelled words.
@DrWolfnstine13
Those subs taken from official blu-ray release, so any complaints should be forwarded to blu-ray authoring studio. I just provided it as is.
I know DJATOM, absolutely not blaming you for this, just stating the obvious because of my disappointment in the official subs on this one, really was enjoying the anime itself but I will wait for what I hope will be a far improved fansub version. If I got paid to actually sub for an official bluray release I would be embarrassed to call this my work.
to all people saying how great mozzi release is... yea sure faces look sharper (as a result of thinning the edges) but this screen shot should clear things up for you (massive loss of detail vs sharper faces) you decide https://i.imgur.com/HuPaicG.jpg
